The House that Hammer Built – The Complete Hinds/Carreras Years 1934-79: Vol 1 (1934-49)

House that hammer Built ~Vol 1NOW AVAILABLE

LIMITED TO 750 COPIES

To celebrate my 25 years in publishing, I am putting together my own definitive history of Hammer – far more complete and detailed than the earlier Hammer Films – The Bray Studios Years, Hammer Films – The Elstree Studios Years and Hammer’s Film Legacy. This ambitious project will run over 5 volumes combining materials uncovered by my recent books with all new research and titled after my fanzine that started it all for me – The House that Hammer Built.

Volume 1 follows the origins of the company from 1934 to 1949. Join me as we learn more about how the Hammer team came together and how they first adapted into their house studios (Dial Close and Oakley Court in this volume). A lot of people thought they were mad at first, but camera and sound crews both agreed they were getting better results in the houses than just from sets built on regular stages. One trade report already called Exclusive/Hammer a legend and it was noted that their quota features (many based on successful BBC radio series/plays) had the quality of bigger budget first features. Exclusive/Hammer was an innovative company from the start and it’s clear why they survived when other small independents making quota films failed.

For the first time, I’ve explored in great detail how Hammer adapted Dial Close and Oakley Court showing how key rooms were used over a number of productions with the aid of screengrabs (and floor plans for Oakley Court).

All Hammer’s films are discussed fully in production order with good coverage of their first two horror films, Mystery of the Mary Celeste with Bela Lugosi and Room to Let.

352 colour pages with hundreds of rare images. Limited to only 750 copies. The exciting journey begins …

Airmail costs to outside Europe from the UK are currently an extortionate rate. We value our overseas customers and do not want to demand stupid airmail prices from them. We are currently removing airmail as an option. Surface mail usually takes up to 6 weeks (sometimes longer). We are sorry about this but this is the best option currently – The books are posted in sturdy book boxes and many of our customers use this cheaper option already.
