In 1970 the British Board of Film Censors raised the ‘X-Certificate from 16 to 18 to combat the new wave of sexploitation movies and Hammer Films (with Fantale Films) took full advantage and planned an adaptation of Sheridan Le Fanu’s novella, Carmilla, called The Vampire Lovers, exploiting the sex, nudity and lesbian overtones. Its success led to two further films in the series, Lust for a Vampire (1970) and Twins of Evil (1971). This scrapbook again presents a multitude of rare images (over 1700) with surviving ephemera including annotated pages from Tudor Gates’ own copy of his original draft for The Vampire Lovers, director Roy Ward Baker’s full annotated script for The Vampire Lovers and the treatments for The Vampire Lovers and The Village of the Vampires/The Vampire Virgins.
